Within the scope of the Science Communication Coordination of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University, this week, it has signed another important event that closely concerns public health.

On the occasion of June 1st World Milk Day, Vice Rector and Faculty Member of the Department of Food Engineering Prof. Dr. Oğuz GÜRSOY explained the production, processing, and health effects of milk, which is frequently consumed in daily life, along with the misconceptions and curiosities related to it in a talk titled “Common Misconceptions About Milk.” The event held at MAKÜ Kitap&Kahve was attended by students from the “60+ Refreshment University,” academic and administrative staff, and students.
One of the most striking topics of the event was the question that has been debated in the public for a long time: “Should street milk be consumed or not?” Prof. Dr. Oğuz GÜRSOY highlighted the microbiological risks that street milk may harbor and the antibiotic residues in milk, explaining scientifically why controlled and industrially properly processed milk should be preferred. Additionally, the reasons for lactose intolerance for those with digestive problems and the logic of producing lactose-free milk were discussed. The talk also allocated significant space to gut health and probiotic products, which have been increasingly recognized in recent years. Prof. Dr. Oğuz GÜRSOY stated that probiotics play a critical role not only for the digestive system but also for strengthening the immune system. Addressing the functions of probiotic-containing products in the intestine, Prof. Dr. Oğuz GÜRSOY explained how probiotics balance the digestive flora by increasing the number of beneficial bacteria in the intestine, the differences between probiotic supplements available in the market and fermented dairy products (kefir, probiotic yogurt, etc.), and how these products should be correctly incorporated into daily nutrition.
At the event, which attracted great interest from participants of all ages, the audience had the opportunity to directly ask all their questions about milk and dairy products to Prof. Dr. Oğuz GÜRSOY.
